Tobal No. 1 is a 1996 3D fighting game developed by DreamFactory and published by Square for the PlayStation. The game’s mechanics were designed with input from Seiichi Ishii, the creator of both Tekken and Virtua Fighter, and all characters were designed by Akira Toriyama of Dragon Ball fame. It was DreamFactory’s debut release and Square’s first venture into the fighting game genre on the platform. The game also features an adventure quest mode alongside its fighting component. Only one PAL variant has been catalogued, a UK, France, and Germany Original release in a Mini Jewel Black Bordered PAL case without a hologram, from January 1997. The case carries a round yellow sticker bearing the memorably irreverent slogan ‘Sell your granny…’. A cult title of significant development pedigree, particularly notable for its Toriyama character designs and the Tekken/Virtua Fighter DNA in its mechanics.
