Ridge Racer Type 4

SCES-01706
Initially Released 10 February 1999

Ridge Racer Type 4, released without the Japanese “R4” prefix in PAL territories, is a 1998 racing game developed and published by Namco for the PlayStation, the fourth home entry in the Ridge Racer series. The game introduced a new Grand Prix mode with four teams, over 300 car models, Gouraud shading on polygons, and two-player split-screen, and is retrospectively regarded as one of the finest racing games of its generation.

Two PAL variants are catalogued, both covering the UK under serial SCES-01706 in Full Jewel PAL cases with a hologram on the case on a single disc. The original release includes a round black “96% A GT Beater” case sticker and a bundled Ridge Racer Type 4 Collectors Demo disc. The Special Bundle variant was packaged with a Jogcon steering controller, distinguishing it as the more sought-after hardware edition. The earliest PAL release was 10 February 1999.
