Penny Racers
SCES-00391
Initially Released 1 October 1996
Penny Racers, known as Choro Q in Japan, is a 1996 racing game developed by Tamsoft and published by Takara, with Sony Computer Entertainment handling PAL distribution. The game features compact, chibi-style cars based on Takara’s popular Choro Q toy range, racing across tarmac, ice, and dirt tracks in a cheerful arcade style.
One PAL variant is catalogued, covering the UK alongside Finland, Sweden, and Norway, suggesting a combined UK and Scandinavian pressing. The release is presented in a Full Jewel PAL case with no hologram on the case, and contains a single English-language disc. The earliest PAL release date is 1 October 1996. Penny Racers was notably the first Choro Q game released outside Japan since a 1984 MSX title, giving it some historical significance.
No loose paperwork or bundled demo discs have been documented. With a single PAL variant covering an unusual combination of territories, this is a modestly rare find in the UK secondhand market and a charming addition to any PAL collection.
