Need for Speed: Road Challenge

Need for Speed: Road Challenge, released in North America as Need for Speed: High Stakes, is the fourth entry in EA Canada’s racing series, developed in collaboration with EA Seattle and published by Electronic Arts. The PAL release under the Road Challenge title introduced a damage system affecting both appearance and performance, along with economy-based tournaments and an expanded Hot Pursuit mode.

Three PAL variants are catalogued. One confirmed pressing covers the UK and Sweden, presented in a Full Jewel PAL case with a standard hologram on the case, carrying serial SLES-01788 and released on 26 March 1999. Two further variants carry separate serials, SLES-01789 and SLES-01790, for French/German and English/Italian/Spanish editions respectively, though case type and hologram details remain unconfirmed for those pressings. The multi-language distribution across three serials suggests a per-language-group publishing approach typical of EA’s European operations in this period.
