Final Fantasy VIII
SLES-02080
Initially Released 27 October 1999
Final Fantasy VIII is the 1999 role-playing game developed and published by Squaresoft, the eighth main entry in the long-running series and the first to feature realistically proportioned characters by Tetsuya Nomura. The PAL physical landscape is unusually broad, with nineteen catalogued variants spanning the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands across Original, Enhanced Edition and Platinum release types. The five language-specific SCES masters split the territories cleanly between English on SLES-02080, French on SLES-02081, German on SLES-02082, Italian on SLES-02083 and Spanish on SLES-02084. All variants are housed in the Multiway Jewel Four Disk case format necessitated by the four-disc presentation, and most carry Hologram B on the case, with selected late Platinum reprints carrying the PSP Hologram instead. The Enhanced Edition is a particularly notable group, bundling poster, memory card, stickers and a t-shirt and frequently surfacing without the documented EAN. Final Fantasy VIII remains one of the headline collector targets in the PAL PSX library.
Collector Notes
Keep an eye out for a rare misprint on the Platinum edition.
A small number of these were shipped with a case with the PSP hologram sticker on instead of the PlayStation One.
These stickers are square, not rectangular, and bear the PSP logo at certain angles.
This appears to affect all regions - though I’m still collecting all examples.
