Ape Escape

Ape Escape is a 1999 3D platform game developed by SCE Japan Studio and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. A landmark title in PlayStation history, it was the first game to require the DualShock controller, building its entire design around the dual analogue sticks. The story follows Spike as he pursues an army of intelligent apes sent through time by the villainous Specter.

Thirteen PAL variants are catalogued across the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands, covering original, Platinum, and Special Bundle release types. All variants are housed in Full Jewel PAL cases on a single disc, with case holograms being either Hologram or Hologram B depending on the serial. UK and Netherlands variants use serial SCES-01564 with Hologram, while French, German, Italian, and Spanish editions use separate serials with Hologram B on the case. Several variants feature a clear “Ape Escape Dualshock Only” case sticker, reinforcing the controller requirement. The Special Bundle editions were packaged with a green DualShock controller and have no barcode on the reverse of the outer box, making them a distinct collector target.
